NewYork-Presbyterian David H. Koch Center

As one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive health care systems, NewYork-Presbyterian is a leader in providing inpatient, ambulatory, and preventive care to the public. Now NewYork-Presbyterian has added to its facilities the 450,0000-square-foot David H. Koch Center, providing patients with personalized and integrated outpatient care, from diagnosis to treatment to aftercare, in a state-of-the-art, patient-friendly facility. The Center offers a range of services, including multidisciplinary care for cancer and digestive diseases, as well as pre-admission testing for all hospital patients, outpatient surgery, interventional radiology, diagnostic imaging, and a wellness center.

Herter Design Group created a comprehensive environmental graphics, wayfinding, and donor recognition program for the new David H. Koch Center. Letting the architecture of the building guide decisions for the program resulted in signage that feels effortless and intuitive. In sections of the building, installing overhead or perpendicular information was impossible; instead the information was integrated into metal door frames or was directly connected to door assemblies, easily visible to patients and staff at a distance down a corridor.

The glass interlayer patterning found throughout the facility also took inspiration from the building itself, specifically the facade. The dynamic and asymmetrical compositions echo the wooden slats on the facade and the interruptions of the wavy frit pattern. A family of patterns was used throughout the building for both distraction markers and vision barriers.

The program at the David H. Koch Center went on to serve as the basis for a comprehensive set of sign standards that will be applied to all the facilities within the larger NewYork-Presbyterian system.
