ASLA Chinatown Green Street Demonstration Project

June 2018

Washington, DC

Branding/Publication

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) chose Green Street of Washington, DC’s Chinatown neighborhood as a demonstration project to illustrate how innovative landscape design could beautify a city street while also managing stormwater runoff. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide a model to cities worldwide on greening their streets and also contributing positively to their citizens’ quality of life.

Herter Design Group began their design of a logo for ASLA’s Chinatown Green Street Demonstration Project by focusing on the five stated goals of the project: Environment, Community, Economics, Leadership, and Art. Each of those goals is represented by five concentric circles. The control of stormwater runoff is illustrated by both lines in a typical street grid pattern that break through the circles, alluding to the permeability of soil; and by the green and blue color combination that evokes the interaction between water and vegetation. Finally, the finished logo subtly acknowledges imagery found throughout the project’s Chinatown neighborhood.
