For Sunrise Senior Living’s first Manhattan facility, located at 139 East 56th Street on the Upper East Side, the goal was to mimic the feel of the gracious residential buildings which define that New York neighborhood. The residents of Sunrise at East 56th should feel at home in the facility and Herter Design Group’s (HDG) designers focused on that aim throughout the process of creating the wayfinding sign program for this recently completed project.
“The guiding principle of our program was restraint. We kept our wayfinding signage to a minimum to avoid any interference in the residents’ feeling of home,” said project manager and HDG partner, Derek Koch. For example, each resident has memory box outside their unit, giving them an opportunity to place photos or objects or mementos that serve to personalize the front door of their home.
“Our goal is always to enhance the architecture while always keeping the needs of the end users in the front of our minds,” said Erik Herter, principal and HDG partner. “When we look at our sign program for Sunrise at East 56th Street, we feel like we’ve helped the residents be more at ease in their new home which is the end goal of our entire project.”
