NewYork-Presbyterian Standardized Isolation Insert Program

May 2022

New York, NY

Environmental Graphics

It is critical for staff and visitors to understand the required protocol and procedures prior to entering an isolation room. Detailed information needs to be posted at the door, indicating entry and exit procedures as well as the necessary PPE for each isolation type. Herter Design Group was tasked by NewYork-Presbyterian with designing changeable insert signs for 11 unique types/combinations of isolation. Because the NYP system encompasses most of New York City’s five boroughs, each isolation insert layout was required to be designed with multiple languages: English, English/Spanish, and English/Traditional Chinese.

Herter Design Group also designed a set of PPE symbols for masks, eye protection, gowns, and gloves.  A base figure was designed so that the PPE symbols could be overlaid and more clearly understood. A lot of care was taken by the HDG designers to manage the dense information requirements and maintain consistency across all types/combinations of isolation. The inserts are pre-printed on heavy laminated stock and are sized to fit within an approximately 6.75″ square acrylic insert sign.
